Vacation Schemes

Our vacation scheme is one of our primary means of selecting candidates for a career at Simmons & Simmons LLP. It provides us with the chance to test out your suitability for a training contract. It is also a unique opportunity for you to get to know our firm, decide if we are the best firm for you and for you to prove your worth during your time with us.

Length of the program

3 weeks in the summer, 1 week in spring or 1 week in winter.

Timing of scheme

Summer, Spring and Winter.

Number of placements

20 interns per scheme in summer, 15 per scheme in spring and 20 interns in winter.

How and when to apply

Undergraduates studying a law degree should apply for a summer vacation scheme in their penultimate year. Undergraduates studying a non-law degree should apply for a summer vacation scheme in their final year.

For our spring schemes, undergraduates studying a law degree should apply in their first year and undergraduates studying a non-law degree should apply in their penultimate year.

We run a winter vacation scheme aimed specifically at final year non-law students and non-law graduates.

We also welcome applications from graduates, mature students, career changers and international students. We require international students to have the right to work in the UK.

All applicants are required to apply online through cvMail.

Training Contract

Trainees sit with either a partner or lawyer, and you will quickly find yourself at the centre of the action and that your legal and overall professional skills are growing daily. Our six month seat system enables you to gain hands on experience in four different areas of our business, working with other lawyers, gaining knowledge in different service areas and dealing with our clients.

Length of the program

Two years.

Seats

There are four six month seats. It is compulsory to do a finance seat and a corporate seat as well as a contentious seat.

Deferrals or different intakes

We are happy to take deferral requests into consideration although we cannot guarantee all requests.

Number of trainees employed

We recruit approximately 40 trainees a year over two intakes (September & March).

How and when to apply

Undergraduates studying a law degree should apply for a training contract in their penultimate year. Undergraduates studying a non-law degree should apply for a training contract in their final year. We also welcome applications from graduates, mature students, career changers and international students.

All applicants are required to apply online through cvMail.

Recruitment Process

Number of Interviews

If your application is successful, you will be invited to complete a remote Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking test which is designed to assess your ability to think critically. It tests your ability to draw inferences, recognise assumptions, evaluate arguments and interpret information.

Once you have passed the critical reasoning test, you will then be invited to our offices to undertake an assessment centre consisting of:

  • a document exercise, testing your ability to assimilate information. The exercise also incorporates a discussion about the document with one of our partners or associates.
  • competency based assessment. This will enable us to find out more about you to see if you possess the right skills to succeed at Simmons & Simmons.
  • a written exercise testing your ability to work well under pressure and organise information clearly and accurately.

Location

Held at our CityPoint offices in London.

With whom

Stage one is coordinated by the Graduate Recruitment team and at the second stage, exercises and interviews are conducted by Partners or Associates.
