Promotion Opportunities
When you qualify we hope you will stay with us and we endeavour to place you in the area of law that suits you best. We aim to retain as many of our trainees as possible at the end of their training contracts. We retained 81% of our trainees in 2013, 87% in 2012 and 100% in 2011.
25% of our partners trained and qualified with us. So did our Managing Partner and several of our Senior Partners. So did 50% of the partners on our board.
Legal Training
As a trainee you will receive first rate training in a supportive working environment. You will work closely with a partner and will be given real responsibility as soon as you are ready to handle it. At least six months will be spent in four areas of our practice and we encourage our trainees to express preferences for the areas in which they would like to train.
In addition to the Professional Skills Course we provide a complementary programme of in-house training. Trainees also attend firm wide legal training relevant to their seats.
Once qualified, our main training and development programmes/activities for lawyers are summarised below:
The legal training programme
Legal training courses and lectures are provided for lawyers at all levels in all practice areas. These vary from one-off lectures on a particular aspect of the law to structured, modular programmes which build on existing knowledge.
The core skills training programme for lawyers
A core programme of personal development courses are delivered to individuals at key career milestones in order to support their development throughout their careers.
This core programme begins with the Professional Skills Course, for those joining the firm as trainees, and runs through to the Insight course for lawyers with six years post-qualification experience.
Other skills training for lawyers
In addition to the legal training and the core programme individuals can attend a wide range of courses in the key areas of business development, communication skills and personal development.
Attributes & Skills
Although proven academic ability is important (we require a 2.1 degree or above) we also value energy, enthusiasm, business sense, commitment and the ability to communicate and relate well to others.
