Firm Background

Travers Smith is a leading independent City firm with a major corporate and commercial practice, and a reputation for excellence in its chosen fields. Less than a quarter of the size of the largest firms, Travers Smith handles high profile and top quality work, much of which has an international dimension.

Firm Objectives

Our objectives are to continue to grow organically and to consolidate our position and our reputation for consistently providing excellent, innovative, commercially-minded and bespoke legal advice.

Areas of Legal Practice

  • Corporate (comprising Corporate Finance, Private Equity and Investment Funds groups)
  • Banking
  • Corporate Recovery
  • Commercial, IP and Technology
  • Competition
  • Employment
  • Litigation
  • Real Estate (including Environment, Planning and Construction groups)
  • Tax and Employee Incentives
  • Financial Services and Markets
  • Pensions

Specialised Areas

The firm has recognised specialists and outstanding teams of lawyers in all of the above fields. The largest proportion of our work is corporate-based, particularly in mid-market mergers and acquisitions.

Employee Numbers

We employ over 250 lawyers and our total staff (including support staff) is around 450.

Firm Offices

London and Paris.

Firm Culture

Firm Perspective

The firm is entrepreneurial and innovative, understated while quietly proud of its achievements, and committed to providing excellent service to its clients. The atmosphere within the firm is good-humoured, sociable and supportive, and our staff at all levels genuinely enjoy each other's company and value each other's work.

Trainee Perspective

Our lawyers work in close-knit teams, with the partners always heavily involved in leading the work. Trainees are a valued part of these teams, and are given high levels of responsibility and often find themselves on the phone to clients or qualified lawyers on the other side of transactions. The room-sharing system (trainees sit with a partner and an associate) is conducive to a lack of hierarchy and to a high level of teamwork and good humour.

Promotion Opportunities

We recruit trainees who we think have the potential to be future partners in the firm. We have one of the lowest fee-earner turnover rates in the City, and are proud of the fact that over half of our lawyers trained with us.

Attributes & Skills

We look for a combination of academic excellence and common sense, and for people who are determined and articulate as well showing an interest in the type of work we do. We also look for applicants who can demonstrate a lighter side and the ability to take their work but not themselves too seriously.

We do not require applicants to have a law degree and around 50% of our trainees are from non-law backgrounds.

Postgraduate Study

Useful postgraduate study is regarded as an asset. The firm has no preference regarding the age of its trainees and this is reflected in a wide range of ages and experience in most intakes.

Legal Training

Professional support lawyers in each department organise internal training sessions for trainees, given by partners and qualified associates. The firm also organises seminars given by external speakers, as well as access to external lectures and workshops. Legal training continues after qualification under the Law Society's Continuing Professional Development programme

Travel Opportunities

Trainees have the opportunity to spend six months in our Paris office. In addition, we have sent qualified associates on exchange schemes overseas to law firms and clients in locations such as New York, Washington, Los Angeles, Toronto, Amsterdam, Brussels and Milan.

Starting Salary

First-year trainee: £39,000
Second-year trainee: £44,000
NQ: £63,000

Sponsorship

We pay all GDL and LPC fees as well as a maintenance of £7,000 in London (£6,500 outside).
