Firm Background
K&L Gates LLP comprises nearly 2,000 lawyers who practice in 48 offices located on five continents. K&L Gates represents leading global corporations, growth and middle-market companies, capital markets participants and entrepreneurs in every major industry group as well as public sector entities, educational institutions, philanthropic organisations and individuals. The firm's practice is a robust full market practice - cutting edge, complex and dynamic, at once regional, national and international in scope. Over the last three years our firm's revenues have exceeded $1 billion and, as stated in the July 2010 issue of the UK publication Legal Business, the firm “has further cemented its position as the Global 100's fastest growing firm”.
Firm Objectives
We aim to provide authoritative and prompt advice to our clients across an international arena by understanding their different commercial environments and anticipating their needs against a framework of emerging trends. We do this by continually enhancing our skill base by ensuring the ongoing development of our people.
Firm Culture
K&L Gates has a contemporary outlook and a diverse culture. We have an open and inclusive environment where team work and knowledge sharing are valued. We are looking for trainees who are excited about working for a large international law firm with some of the world's most forward thinking clients.
Pro-Bono and Corporate Social Responsibility activities feature heavily in the thinking of our lawyers. The firm has a long and distinguished tradition of providing Pro-Bono legal representation and performing public service work in our communities. Opportunities for Pro-Bono and other public service activities at K&L Gates are abundant and as varied as the personalities of the lawyers contributing their time, skills and energy.
Promotion Opportunities
On successful completion of training contracts, the majority of trainees are retained and we anticipate that they will build a long and prosperous career with us. We offer an in-depth mentoring and career development scheme, providing a transparent route to partnership. Excellent training, coaching and development opportunities are designed to equip our people to succeed.
Legal Training
Our lawyers find themselves at the cutting edge of global legal practice and therefore our substantive programmes, classroom-based training and interactive workshops cover all areas of legal knowledge and skills development. Further, we work closely with our lawyers to continually identify and develop new programming to meet the challenge of our clients' ever-changing business needs.
Trainees spend six month seats in four of the following areas: corporate, banking and finance, dispute resolution and litigation, intellectual property, construction, tax, real estate, employment, white collar crime, pensions and environment. Each trainee sits with a supervisor and is allocated an individual mentor to ensure all round supervision and training.
The firm has a thorough induction scheme. High importance is placed on the acquisition of business and professional skills, with considerable emphasis on client contact and early responsibility. The training programme consists of weekly legal education seminars, workshops and a full programme of skills electives.
Travel Opportunities
From the very outset of your legal career we want you to experience all that an international law firm can offer whether you are from one of our European, Asian or US offices. Thereafter, opportunities to travel depend on work requirements. Interoffice secondments and client secondments are available.
Attributes & Skills
You will need an impressive academic record to include 320 UCAS points and a 2:1 degree or equivalent. Our firm's culture is best suited to trainees who are proactive, adaptable and commercially aware. To operate successfully in our international arena, individuals have to be capable of developing positive working relationships with colleagues and clients alike.
