Firm Background

Burges Salmon is consistently ranked among the UK's most successful commercial law firms. Our national and international client base ranges from private individuals to government departments and FTSE 100 companies including The Crown Estate, HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group, The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and FirstGroup.

We offer a cohesive, collaborative environment which results in strong working relationships right across the firm and an enhanced service for our clients. The quality of our expertise is widely recognised in a range of areas, including corporate, commercial, litigation, property and tax & trusts.

Talent is critical to our success. This is why we invest so much time and resource into development, actively encouraging training and supporting ideas at every level of the business.

Firm Objectives

To be a leading UK law firm with global reach.

Employee Numbers

650+ people in total including 79 partners and 46 trainees.

Firm Culture

Our reputation for high quality work and excellent client service underpins all that we do which allows us to attract and retain top quality people. We nurture this talent, supporting personal development and providing an inspiring and challenging workplace environment. Our unique working culture, which is open, collaborative and strongly client-focussed, encourages communication and cohesive teamwork. This approach also enables us to assemble the most appropriate team to fit clients' needs which allows us to be flexible in bringing the right mix of skills, experience and commercial insight.

We take our corporate social responsibility seriously and we value equality and diversity.

Promotion Opportunities

Trainees join the firm on a two year training contract and we aim to retain 100% of our trainees on qualification. More detailed information on career progression at Burges Salmon can be found online via the 'careers' section of our website.

Legal Training

We incorporate six seats into our training contract rather than the usual four. This allows trainees maximum exposure to all areas of the firm's work. Trainees are given early responsibility balanced with an open door policy for advice and guidance from experienced supervisors. This enables our trainees to develop themselves as trusted business advisors quickly, contributing to the firm and deepening their professional expertise in a supportive and encouraging environment.

You will spend the first four seats alternating between our main departments. They are broken down as follows:

  • Corporate OR Banking OR Commercial OR Pensions & Incentives OR Employment OR Private Client and Wealth Structuring
  • Real Estate OR Planning
  • Environment OR Commercial Disputes & Construction OR Agriculture & Property Disputes.

Your fifth seat is an option seat, in which you can select any area of the firm to spend your seat. You could either choose to revisit a department of particular interest, or move into an entirely new area.

The final seat is your qualification seat. This is spent in the department in which you have chosen to qualify, thereby allowing you to build the necessary skills and contacts for a smooth transition on qualification.

Throughout the training programme black letter law and business skills training is covered with courses specifically tailored to meet each trainee's needs. In addition, the firm runs in-house seminars for each department/unit which the trainees are invited to attend to benefit from the experience of our senior people who deliver these training sessions.

Further information on our training programme can be found on our website.

Travel Opportunities

Depending on the department and the client, there may be opportunities for trainees to spend time overseas.
