Vacation Schemes

Burges Salmon offers 4 two-week vacation schemes during the summer. Candidates visit two departments of their choice, supervised by a partner or senior solicitor. They attend court visits and client meetings as well as skills sessions run by trainees and solicitors. In addition to this, there are many social and sports events throughout the placement that give candidates a real insight into life as a trainee solicitor. Remuneration: £250 per week.

Length of the program

2 weeks, with a week spent in each department.

Timing of Scheme

Candidates attend an assessment centre in February and we offer places on the vacation schemes shortly after. The schemes run from mid-June to early August.

Number of placements

9 candidates attend each scheme.

How and when to apply

Candidates can apply online via the recruitment pages of our website from 1st October. The deadline for vacation scheme applications is 14 January. We invite successful candidates to attend an assessment centre in February and from this offer places on our vacation scheme.

Training Contract

Our training contract consists of six seats rather than the usual four which we believe ensures our trainees gain maximum exposure to our varied practice areas. Trainees are given early responsibility balanced with an open door policy for advice and guidance from experienced supervisors. This enables our trainees to develop themselves as trusted business advisors quickly, contributing to the firm and deepening their professional expertise in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Throughout the training programme black letter law and business skills training is covered with courses specifically tailored to meet each trainee's needs. In addition, the firm runs in-house seminars for each department/unit which the trainees are invited to attend to benefit from the experience of our senior people who deliver these training sessions.

Further information on our training programme can be found on our website.

Length of the program

2 years.

Seats

We incorporate six seats into our training contract rather than the usual four. This allows trainees maximum exposure to all areas of the firm's work.

Trainees spend the first four seats alternating between our main departments. They are broken down as follows:

  • Corporate OR Banking OR Commercial OR Pensions & Incentives OR Employment OR Private Client and Wealth Structuring
  • Real Estate OR Planning
  • Environment OR Commercial Disputes & Construction OR Agriculture & Property Disputes.

Your fifth seat is an option seat, in which you can select any area of the firm to spend your seat. You could either choose to revisit a department of particular interest, or move into an entirely new area.

The final seat is the qualification seat. This is spent in the department in which you have chosen to qualify, thereby allowing you to build the necessary skills and contacts for a smooth transition on qualification.

Deferrals or different intakes

We have one intake each year in August/September. Deferrals are possible and are dealt with on a case by case basis.

Number of trainees employed

We recruit 25 trainees each year.

How and when to apply

Please apply online via the recruitment pages of our website. We accept applications from 1st October and the deadline for training contract applications is 31st July.

Recruitment Process

The process for vacation scheme candidates and direct candidates is slightly different.

Vacation placement candidates:
Candidates attend an interview at the end of their vacation scheme with a recruitment partner and a member of the HR team.

Direct candidates:

All candidates have the opportunity to meet with current trainees and take a tour of our offices.

Number of Interviews

64 Interviews (including vacation scheme candidates and assessment centre applicants).

Location

Interviews take place at our head office in Bristol - this gives candidates the chance to have a look around and meet some of our people.

With whom

Training contract interviews are with a recruitment partner and a member of the HR team.
