Inside K&L Gates

1. WHAT DREW YOU TO THIS FIRM?

Impressive international presence with prestigious clients yet a small trainee intake so you feel like you are a part of a team.

I was already aware of the firm’s friendly reputation before applying. The fact that this was reinforced on the assessment day (making the day quite enjoyable!) drew me to the firm further.

Wide practice range.

2. What areas have you worked in?

Real Estate

3. What type of work have you done in each of these areas?

As a real estate trainee, I was given my own files to run very early on. Most of the work includes drafting deeds of covenant, rent review memorandums, licenses to alter, sublet and assign. I have also prepared research memorandums for my supervisor.

4. What clients have you done work for?

My supervisor has quite a diverse client base which means I have worked for individuals, companies and also property funds. One of our biggest real estate clients is Windsor Life Assurance and there is usually one trainee allocated to dealing with all their small matters. I have drafted many licences for Windsor and one of my jobs is also to prepare their monthly Management Reports to indicate the progress made on each matter.

5. Have you had much client contact?

Yes. I have been taken to client meetings and as I run my own files, have often spoken to clients on the phone.

6. Have you been given much responsibility?

Yes, I think real estate is a fantastic department for early responsibility. However, all correspondence is checked before being sent out.

7. What type of training have you undertaken at the firm?

  • Legal research skills
  • Legal drafting
  • Negotiation skills
  • Advocacy
  • 'Introduction to the City'
  • Time management training
  • Various other seminars and learning lunches

8. What hours do you generally work? What is expected?

About 8.45 am - 7 pm.

9. How have you received feedback about your performance?

As I am only in my first seat, I have only received a mid-seat review so far. I am expecting a more detailed end of seat review next month from my supervisor. I have also been given comments and feedback on my work throughout my seat.

10. How would you describe the culture and working environment within the firm?

Professional, friendly and helpful.

11. What do you like most about working for the firm?

Very approachable associates and partners who are willing to help.

Impressive client base and excellent quality of work. I have never had to do administrative tasks during my seat as I was given real legal work and client contact from the outset.

12. What tips would you give to someone applying to your firm?

  • Conduct thorough research on the firm so the answers in your application form and during the interview are specifically tailored to K&L Gates.
  • Brush up on commercial awareness by reading the financial times.
  • Be yourself at the assessment day and try to enjoy it!

Our sincere thanks to those who participated in the Insider interviews.
